'Singing for England!'
The
Last Night of the Proms at St Mary's
The evening of Saturday, September 19th, 2009 saw the
by now firmly-established traditional night
of licensed jingoism in St Mary's Hall. Fr Neil performed a programme
of rousing patrotic music on the organ,
and provided piano and organ accompaniment for equally-gifted soloist
Sarah Helsby Hughes,
as she performed a scintillating selection of opera and musical
numbers. There was an interval glass of 'bubbly',
kindly sponsored by local firm Barrington's, to launch the even more
tradiitonal second half of the programme.
We had ended the first half with the singing of 'Jerusalem', and joined
the soloists in 'Rule Britannia'
and 'Land of Hope and Glory' to bring the final curtain down. As ever,
St Mary's had decked the church out
appropriately, to complement the lusty waving of flags and banners, the
tooting of toy trumpets...
and the wearing of patriotic waistcoats and the odd silly hat!
A Good Time Was Had By All ... and over £500 was raised for the
church.
('Where DID
you get that hat...?)
