'THE LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS'
Last year saw the premiere of Waterloo's own 'Last Night of the Proms', when Fr Neil Kelley and Gerard Callacher provided a rousing programme of organ pieces on the two organs at St Mary's Church, Waterloo. Following the success of the event, our 'Kings of the Keyboard' provided members and friends of both churches with a different but equally entertaining programme on Saturday, September 18th.
As you will see from the programme below, the music ranged from the quietly lyrical to the decidedly bombastic. Following a glass of champagne in the interval, the second half contained some familiar 'Last Night' items, with the Vicar singing 'Rule Britannia' and everybody else joining in the choruses, in spirited renderings of 'Jerusalem' and, to round off the evening, in 'Land of Hope and Glory' to the great Elgar tune.
Our pictures show the performers before, during and at the end of the concert, and various wildly enthusiastic members of the audience in the bunting-bedecked church at St Mary's. A great time was had by all, it was much cheaper than the Albert Hall, you didn't have to queue overnight for the privilege of standing, and of course there was the champagne!
Last year we sold nearly 100 CDs of highlights from the Proms evening, and from the piano recitals by Neil and Ged which ended the Summer Saturday series. CDs of this year's two corresponding events will, it is hoped, be on sale before long, and they, like the concerts, are a bargain.
