The service ends with the stripping of the altars, the lowering of the lights and the beginning of the silent Watch, until midnight ushers in Good Friday. GOOD FRIDAY The liturgy of this, the most sombre day of the church's year, is equally distinctive and moving. The Great Crucifix, which for the rest of the year hangs in the Chapel of the Cross, now lies before the font, draped in solemn purple. During the course of the service, it is borne up through the church to be carefully lifted up to stand between the choir stalls. Members of the congregation come up to offer prayers and veneration. this service, marking the traditional hours of Christ's crucifixion and death, likewise closes in silence. The Easter services |
