A Message from Lord Runcie of Cuddesdon
St Faith’s is a very special place for me and for many others. It was the church that first nurtured my faith and it has always held a very particular place in my affections. Thanks to the most readable of church magazines and the letters of friends I have been able to follow its fortunes over the years and was pleased to share in the memorable worship that marked the beginning of your centenary celebrations in May 1998. I rejoice at the faithful witness of so many over the past hundred years, not least the many vocations to the priesthood that have been born and dedicated in this household of faith.
The Centenary Year provides us with a unique opportunity to reflect, to celebrate and to give thanks for many blessings which God has bestowed on us. The programme and planning for the year is impressive. They offer an exciting variety of events, with acts of worship, great and small, much fine music, preaching and meditation and events for people of all ages. I hope the whole family of St. Faith’s will make use of all the opportunities this programme offers to enrich their lives in this Christian community.
However, these are not times for spiritual self-indulgence. The coincidence of St. Faith’s centenary and the millennium year forces us to consider the place of the church in the twenty-first century. I have no doubt, that a sense of the sacred is part of our humanity. We may neglect it or mock it but we are impoverished without it. Yet if this sense lacks a focus it can drift off into sentimentality or mass hysteria. It is the genius of St. Faith’s to have provided a disciplined focus for faith and the inspiration for its expression in the realities of the society in which we find ourselves. We pray that under God’s guidance the year 2000 will be one to consider afresh how we can continue that great tradition and in doing so meets the needs of the new age.
I send this message with my gratitude, affection and prayers for God’s blessing on St. Faith’s and this centenary year.
